GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Start the day with a nod to FedMart and the history of discount shopping. Founded by Sol Price in San Diego in 1954, the company grew from a membership-based warehouse store into a retailer serving communities across California and the Southwest. Its evolving stores added food, pharmacies, and optical departments, while its closure in 1982 marked the end of a notable regional chapter. A thoughtful choice for former shoppers, retail-history collectors, and anyone who remembers FedMart’s place in everyday life.
FedMart began in 1954 in San Diego, California, when attorney Sol Price opened a discount store in an inherited warehouse at 2380 Main Street. Initially open to government employees through a family membership, it sold a mix of jewelry, furniture, and liquor and took in $4.5 million in its first year. A second store opened in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1955, followed by one in San Antonio, Texas; the chain later expanded across California and the Southwest. In the 1960s, FedMart dropped membership requirements and added food, wholesale-priced gasoline, pharmacies, and optical departments. It became publicly traded on the American Stock Exchange in 1969. In 1975, German businessman Hugo Mann gained control of the company, and Price left his leadership role the next year. FedMart expanded through leases and acquisitions, including the West Coast division of Two Guys in 1977 and Globe Store in 1978. With about 70 stores by 1979, the chain later began losing money. Mann took it private in 1981, and FedMart closed in 1982. Target leased 35 former locations, while the remaining sites went to Ralphs or other retail operators. Some former stores continued under new ownership, and the company changed its name to Sunbelt Realty.
