Bring Freehold Raceway history to your next round of golf. Racing in Freehold dates to the 1830s, and harness racing became part of the area's annual fair in 1854. Across generations, fans followed the track's signature Cane Pace and remembered the extraordinary triple dead heat of October 3, 1953. The venue held its final racing program in December 2024, closing a chapter in central New Jersey sports history. These golf balls offer racing enthusiasts a distinctive way to keep that story in play.
Freehold Raceway was a half-mile harness racetrack in Freehold, New Jersey. Horse racing there dates to the 1830s. The Monmouth County Agricultural Society formed on December 17, 1853, and began holding an annual fair with harness racing at the track in 1854. An electrical fire destroyed the main building in 1984; racing continued under tents until a replacement building was completed in 1986. Across the street, Freehold Raceway Mall opened in 1990 and featured a harness-racing motif until 2007. In 1998, a joint venture of Penn National Gaming and Greenwood Racing acquired the track. Freehold hosted the Cane Pace from 1998 to 2010. Run annually since 1955, the race became the first leg of the Triple Crown of Harness Racing for Pacers in 1956, alongside the Little Brown Jug and the Messenger Stakes. In 2005, Freehold temporarily hosted the Yonkers Trot while Yonkers Raceway underwent renovations. A triple dead heat occurred there on October 3, 1953, when three horses crossed the finish line together. Officials announced closure in September 2024; the final racing program took place December 28. At closure, it was described as the oldest racetrack in the United States. Redevelopment plans reported by 2026 included retail, restaurants, shops, and possible housing.
