Fry's Electronics was an American big-box retailer headquartered in San Jose, California, in Silicon Valley. John, Randy, and David Fry, together with Kathryn Kolder, opened the first store in Sunnyvale on May 17, 1985. The venture adapted the Fry brothers' grocery-retailing familiarity to computers and electronics; their father, Charles Fry, had sold the California-based Fry's Supermarkets chain to Dillons in 1972. The original Sunnyvale store carried components, software, consumer electronics, technical books, and snack foods, and promoted itself as "The One-Stop Shop for the Silicon Valley Professional." Fry's later operated a larger themed Sunnyvale store and ultimately moved to 1077 E Arques Ave. It acquired and converted Incredible Universe superstores in 1996. By 2019, the chain had reached 34 stores across nine states. Online sales evolved after the 2001 purchase of Cyberian Outpost, with Outpost.com later redirected to Frys.com. Fry's announced the immediate, permanent closure of all stores on February 24, 2021, and entered general assignment on April 2, 2021.
