Founded in September 1985 by Ted Waitt and Mike Hammond as TIPC Network, the company began by selling software and peripherals before assembling its own computers. It became Gateway 2000, Inc., in 1986 and found early success with mail-order PC-compatible systems. In 1988 it moved its headquarters to Sioux City, Iowa, then to North Sioux City, South Dakota, in 1990. The company grew into a major computer seller, went public in 1993, and expanded into Europe and other markets. Its cow-spotted shipping boxes and rural Midwestern advertising became recognizable parts of its brand. In 1998 it moved its headquarters to La Jolla, California, and began dropping “2000”; it was formally reincorporated as Gateway, Inc., in 1999. After years of financial losses and restructuring, Gateway acquired eMachines in 2004 and later shifted toward retail sales and consumer electronics. Acer acquired Gateway in October 2007. Acer subsequently used Gateway as a sub-brand, discontinued it, then revived the branding in 2020 for laptops and tablets sold through Walmart.
