Hudson Company began in 1881 and became synonymous with the massive downtown Detroit flagship, Woodward Avenue shopping, and suburban destinations including Northland, Eastland, and Westland. The J. L. Hudson Company, known as Hudson's, was an upscale department store chain based in Detroit, Michigan. Joseph Lowthian Hudson founded the business in 1881; it grew from beginnings in the Detroit Opera House as Detroit and the auto industry expanded. After Hudson died in 1912, his nephews James, Joseph, Oscar and Richard Webber took control. Joseph L. Hudson Jr. became president in 1961. The downtown Woodward Avenue flagship ultimately occupied an entire city block in a 25-story building. Hudson's entered suburban Detroit with Northland Center in Southfield in 1954, followed by Eastland Center in 1957 and Westland Center in 1965. The Dayton Co. acquired J. L. Hudson Co. in 1969, creating Dayton-Hudson Corporation. The downtown flagship closed January 17, 1983, and the company formally merged into Dayton Hudson's Department Store Division in 1984. Stores retained the Hudson's name until 2001, when they became Marshall Field's. Those former stores later entered Macy's in 2006. Dayton-Hudson became Target Corporation in 2000.
