The J. L. Hudson Company, commonly known as Hudson's, was an upscale department store chain based in Detroit, Michigan. Joseph Lowthian Hudson founded the business in 1881, and it grew from its beginnings in the Detroit Opera House into a 25-story downtown flagship occupying an entire city block. Hudson led the store until his death in 1912, when four Webber nephews assumed control; Joseph L. Hudson, Jr. became president in 1961. The chain expanded from Detroit into suburban shopping centers, beginning with Northland Center in Southfield in 1954, followed by Eastland Center in 1957 and Westland Center in 1965. The Dayton Company acquired J. L. Hudson Co. in 1969, creating Dayton-Hudson Corporation. The downtown flagship closed on January 17, 1983, and its building was imploded on October 24, 1998. Hudson's stores retained their name until 2001, when Dayton-Hudson, renamed Target Corporation in 2000, rebranded Hudson's and Dayton's as Marshall Field's. Former Hudson's locations later entered the Macy's chain in 2006.
