Illinois Central Railroad, reporting mark IC, was chartered by the Illinois General Assembly on February 10, 1851, following a federal land grant signed in 1850. It became the first land-grant railroad in the United States. When completed in 1856, its main line from Cairo, Illinois, to Galena was the world’s longest railroad, with a branch from Centralia to Chicago. The system later expanded into Iowa, Mississippi, Louisiana, Kentucky, Wisconsin, South Dakota, and Nebraska, linking Chicago with New Orleans and Mobile. Passenger operations included the Panama Limited, City of New Orleans, Green Diamond, Hawkeye, and City of Miami. In 1972, Illinois Central merged with Gulf, Mobile and Ohio to form Illinois Central Gulf Railroad. The company resumed the Illinois Central Railroad name in 1988. Canadian National Railway acquired control in 1998, integrated operations in 1999, and retains Illinois Central as a non-operating subsidiary.
