GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

Keep Illinois rail history in view with this square porcelain fridge magnet inspired by Illinois Terminal Railroad Company. The name brings to mind electric interurban trains that connected St. Louis, Springfield, Peoria, and Danville across central and southern Illinois. Passenger service ended in 1958, but freight operations continued under joint ownership before the railroad merged into Norfolk and Western in 1982. A small keepsake for railway collections, kitchen displays, and anyone who enjoys the story of the region's changing transportation links.

The Illinois Terminal Railroad Company grew from the Illinois Traction System, a network consolidated in the early 1900s by businessman William B. McKinley. From 1896, electric interurban trains served central and southern Illinois, with a Y-shaped main line linking St. Louis to Springfield and extending to Peoria and Danville. At its peak, the system offered passenger service over 550 miles of track. Financial strain during the Great Depression, the loss of an affiliated utility relationship, and changes in passenger travel led to reorganization in 1937 under the Illinois Terminal name. Freight interchange with major railroads became increasingly important as passenger routes contracted. The final interurban service ended on March 3, 1958; a St. Louis–Granite City commuter service also ended that year. Nine connecting railroads jointly acquired the company in June 1956, continuing freight operations as a diesel-powered short line. Norfolk and Western Railway bought its partners' interests in 1981, and the railroad merged into N&W on May 8, 1982. Later, surviving St. Louis trackage passed to a short-line operator, whose service ended in 2004.
