This Independence Air heavy knit quarter-zip sweatshirt honors the carrier that made Washington Dulles its home during a memorable 2004 to 2006 run. Born from Atlantic Coast Airlines' decision to become an independent airline, Independence Air created a recognizable identity in a changing aviation landscape. It is an easy way for collectors, former passengers, airport-history fans, and aviation professionals to recognize an especially bold Dulles story.
Independence Air was a low-cost airline based at Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia. Its predecessor, Atlantic Coast Airlines, began on December 15, 1989, operating feeder service for United Airlines and Delta Air Lines under their regional brands. After its United contract was withdrawn, Atlantic Coast reinvented itself as Independence Air, a transition announced on November 19, 2003. Flight operations under the new name began June 16, 2004. Owned by FLYi, Inc., the carrier was headquartered near Dulles in unincorporated Loudoun County and built a network centered on East Coast markets with service extending west. Its fleet initially emphasized 50-seat regional jets before larger Airbus A319 aircraft were added. The airline entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy on November 7, 2005, and ended service on January 5, 2006. In March 2006, Northwest Airlines acquired its operating certificate and reported that the resulting regional airline would be renamed Compass Airlines.
