Independent Subway System (IND) Unisex Quarter Zip Pullover
Product Details & Size Guide
Bring a chapter of New York’s subway story along on everyday outings with this Independent Subway System-inspired pullover. Mayor John Hylan’s push for city-operated lines led to construction beginning in 1925, and the first Eighth Avenue Line service opened in 1932. The network expanded into several boroughs before unification in 1940. Its history connects civic ambition, recognizable routes, and the making of the modern subway, making this a considered choice for transit fans and city-history collectors.
The Independent Subway System, known before 1940 as the Independent City-Owned Subway System and by other related names, was New York City's municipally owned and operated rapid transit network. Mayor John Hylan proposed city-operated lines in the early 1920s to compete with the privately operated or jointly funded Interborough Rapid Transit Company and Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation. Construction began with a groundbreaking at 123rd Street and St. Nicholas Avenue on March 14, 1925. The first line, Manhattan's Eighth Avenue Line, opened on September 10, 1932, from 207th Street to Chambers Street. Additional routes followed through Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens, including the Sixth Avenue, Queens Boulevard, Fulton Street, and Crosstown lines. In 1940, the IND network was unified with the IRT and BMT systems under city ownership; the IND name was adopted to match their three-letter initials. Its routes became part of today's New York City Subway. Later connections and extensions linked IND-built lines with former BMT routes, and the original services contributed to several modern lettered subway services.
