IndyMac’s history stretches from its 1985 origins through its 2000 bank conversion and the dramatic transition of 2008. IndyMac, short for Independent National Mortgage Corporation, began in 1985 as Countrywide Mortgage Investment, founded by David S. Loeb and Angelo Mozilo to collateralize loans too large for sale to major secondary-market purchasers. Countrywide spun off IndyMac as an independent company in 1997, with Mike Perry as chief executive. In July 2000, IndyMac Mortgage Holdings acquired SGV Bancorp, parent of First Federal Savings and Loan Association of San Gabriel Valley, adopted the IndyMac Bank name, and became a California-headquartered bank. Its Pasadena holding company later acquired Financial Freedom in 2004, New York Mortgage Company in 2007, and Barrington Capital Corporation in 2007. The bank expanded through mortgage lending, including Alt-A and reverse mortgages. Following mortgage-market disruption, the FDIC placed IndyMac Bank into conservatorship on July 11, 2008. Much of the business was sold to IMB HoldCo LLC and became OneWest Bank, while IndyMac Federal Bank was created to wind down remaining assets and liabilities.
