The Infonautics youth hoodie celebrates the adventurous spirit of early digital knowledge services. Founded in Wayne, Pennsylvania in 1992, Infonautics pursued new ways to connect people with research and reference information as the internet rapidly evolved. This design is made for young tech enthusiasts, library lovers, family history storytellers, and collectors who appreciate the Philadelphia-area companies that helped define an important web-era moment.
Infonautics, Inc. was an information services company founded in 1992 by Marvin Weinberger, Lawrence Husick, and Josh Kopelman. Headquartered in Wayne, Pennsylvania, it was spun out from Telebase, Inc., which retained a minority position. Its origins reached back to a 1990 concept by Weinberger and Husick for Homework Helper, an unlimited monthly research service built around a large multimedia database and a natural-language interface. Early development involved work with Brewster Kahle, a protocol for a massively parallel computer system, a later shift toward semantic search technology, and hardware support from Tandem Computers. That multimedia database work produced multiple U.S. patents. Infonautics developed Homework Helper on Prodigy as well as Encyclopedia.com, Electric Library, and CompanySleuth. The company joined the Nasdaq stock exchange in 1996 and was delisted in 2001. That year, it acquired Tucows in a reverse takeover and subsequently adopted the Tucows name. In 2002, eLibrary and Encyclopedia.com were sold to HighBeam Research.
