Infoseek was an American internet search engine founded by Steve Kirsch in 1994 and operated by Infoseek Corporation from Sunnyvale, California. It launched in January 1994 as a pay-for-use service, ended that model in August, and returned as Infoseek Search in February 1995. That year it became the default search engine for Netscape Navigator through a deal with Netscape. Its Nasdaq initial public offering began on June 11, 1996, under the symbol SEEK. In partnership with Aptex Software, Infoseek developed behavioral targeting through its UltraMatch algorithms, announced in 1996 and released the following year. Disney bought a 43 percent stake in 1998 and acquired the remaining shares in 1999. After combining Infoseek with Disney-acquired Starwave properties, Disney formed the Go.com portal. Disney cancelled the service in February 2001. Infoseek's Ultraseek Server enterprise-search technology was sold to Inktomi in 2000, later passed to Verity, Autonomy, and Hewlett-Packard.
