Interborough Rapid Transit Company Metal Bottle Opener
Product Details & Size Guide
Celebrate the Interborough Rapid Transit Company and the beginnings of underground travel in New York. Founded in 1902, the IRT opened its first subway route in 1904, connecting City Hall with 145th Street and changing the way people crossed the city. Its routes later became part of the unified subway system, and the numbered A Division still reflects that history. This transit-inspired bottle opener makes a distinctive addition to a home bar, collection, or gathering with fellow New York history enthusiasts.
Founded on May 6, 1902, by August Belmont Jr., the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT) was created to operate New York City’s first underground rapid transit system. Belmont and John B. McDonald’s Rapid Transit Construction Company had won the right to build the railway in 1900. The first IRT subway opened on October 27, 1904, running from City Hall to 145th Street at Broadway. In 1903, before that subway began service, the IRT leased the Manhattan Railway Company, operator of four elevated railways in Manhattan and an extension into the Bronx. In 1913, the IRT signed the Dual Contracts with Brooklyn Rapid Transit to expand the subway; the agreement set the fare at five cents for forty-nine years. New York City acquired the IRT’s properties and operations on June 12, 1940, bringing its lines into the unified subway system. The former IRT routes are now the numbered services of the A Division, also known as the IRT Division. Later changes included transfer of the Flushing Line to IRT responsibility in 1949 and extensions to Harlem–148th Street in 1968 and 34th Street–Hudson Yards in 2015.
