Add a note of New York transit history to everyday lists and reminders with an Interborough Rapid Transit Company sticky note pad. Founded in 1902, the IRT opened the city’s first underground subway in 1904 and helped shape a network that expanded through the 1913 Dual Contracts. City ownership followed in 1940, while the former IRT routes remain part of the numbered A Division. A practical desk companion for transit enthusiasts, students of city history, or collectors who enjoy keeping a reminder of New York’s railway past close at hand.

Founded on May 6, 1902, by August Belmont Jr., the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT) was created to operate New York City’s first underground rapid transit system. Belmont and John B. McDonald’s Rapid Transit Construction Company had won the right to build the railway in 1900. The first IRT subway opened on October 27, 1904, running from City Hall to 145th Street at Broadway. In 1903, before that subway began service, the IRT leased the Manhattan Railway Company, operator of four elevated railways in Manhattan and an extension into the Bronx. In 1913, the IRT signed the Dual Contracts with Brooklyn Rapid Transit to expand the subway; the agreement set the fare at five cents for forty-nine years. New York City acquired the IRT’s properties and operations on June 12, 1940, bringing its lines into the unified subway system. The former IRT routes are now the numbered services of the A Division, also known as the IRT Division. Later changes included transfer of the Flushing Line to IRT responsibility in 1949 and extensions to Harlem–148th Street in 1968 and 34th Street–Hudson Yards in 2015.

Keep a stack by the phone for action items, stash a pad in your planner for weekly priorities, or place one on a conference table where everyone can jot a quick note. The adhesive holds through handling but releases cleanly when you move items around. For people who prefer minimal branding and maximum writing space, these pads help keep thoughts visible and tasks moving forward without shouting for attention.
