This Island Airlines youth hoodie sweatshirt celebrates a carrier woven into the story of Nantucket access and Cape aviation. Known for scheduled service between Hyannis and Nantucket, Island Airlines carried the friendly identity Nantucket's Community Airline. Its larger history reaches from early biplane transport and Ford Trimotor operations to commuter flights and charter service. Island Airlines was a commuter airline headquartered at Barnstable Municipal Airport in Barnstable, Massachusetts. It operated hourly scheduled flights linking Hyannis with Nantucket and used the slogan "Nantucket's Community Airline." Its roots reached to 1930, when former barnstormer Milton "Red" Hersberger developed the first aerial transport to Nantucket with two biplanes under the name Erie Isle Airways. He acquired his first Ford Trimotor in 1932, later expanding the type in the fleet. Following World War II, Hersberger obtained surplus engines for the Trimotors, renamed the operation Sky Tours, and sold it in 1953. The business changed hands again in 1973 and received the Island Airlines name in 1991 when William McGrath assumed ownership. In January 2009, the airline announced a Cessna Grand Caravan for the Hyannis-Nantucket route, later adding three more. Its Ocean Wings Air Charter operation served private-flight customers in the Northeast. Island Airlines and sister company Cape & Islands Air Freight ceased operations on December 11, 2015.
