GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Make room for ideas and memories with a spiral notebook inspired by J.M. Fields. The department store chain grew from Enterprise Stores and expanded across the eastern seaboard, bringing clothing, housewares, sporting goods, and more to communities from New England to Florida. Some stores were connected to Food Fair groceries, making the shopping experience especially distinctive. A useful pick for note-taking, journaling, or gifting to former shoppers and collectors interested in the changing story of American retail.
J.M. Fields was a discount department store chain based in Salem, Massachusetts. Its roots went back to Enterprise Stores, an early-1900s business founded by Massachusetts partners Phillip Feldman and Samuel Glass. In the early 1950s, Feldman’s son Joseph M. Feldman took over the stores with Hy Glass and George Glass. Joseph chose the J.M. Fields name to avoid an association with any political, cultural, religious, or national identity. The partners pursued expansion, and by 1961 the chain had about fifty stores. Food Fair Corporation purchased the growing business that year. J.M. Fields expanded from New England along the eastern seaboard, from Maine to Florida. Many newer stores were built beside Food Fair grocery stores, with interior connections that let shoppers move between the two without going outside. The department stores offered clothing, housewares, sporting goods, electronics, and lawn and garden merchandise; some locations also had separate automotive centers. In 1965, the home office moved from Boston to Food Fair’s headquarters in Philadelphia. When Food Fair filed for bankruptcy in 1978, J.M. Fields stores closed. Former locations in the Northeast later became Kmart, Jefferson Ward, and Caldor stores, while many Southern locations were taken over by Kmart.
