Celebrate the stores and shopping memories behind J. W. Knapp Company with this hoodie / sweatshirt. Knapp's traces its roots to 1893, when Joseph W. Knapp and Frank W. Jewett opened a store in Albion. The business moved to Lansing, became a downtown destination, and later served shoppers at suburban mall locations. Its long history reflects a changing region and the everyday appeal of a trusted department store. Made for former customers, local-history fans, and collectors of Michigan retail stories.
J. W. Knapp Company, commonly known as Knapp's, was a department-store chain based in Lansing, Michigan. In 1893, Joseph W. Knapp and Frank W. Jewett opened a dry-goods, coat, and carpet store in Albion as Jewett & Knapp. By 1897, it had moved to 123 N. Washington Avenue in Lansing. In 1908, Jewett and Knapp sold the business to Frank Lackey, who renamed it J. W. Knapp Company; Knapp continued to oversee operations. That year, the store moved to South Washington Street. A larger downtown store opened at 300 S. Washington in 1939, on the site of the former Hotel Downey, and grew to cover a city block. In the 1950s, the company was sold to the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, which also owned other regional department stores. Knapp's later opened in East Lansing and at Meridian Mall in Okemos, which opened in 1969. In 1972, it acquired locations at Lansing Mall and Westwood Mall in Jackson from Wurzburg's. L.S. Good Co. bought the Mott Foundation divisions in 1970 and declared bankruptcy in 1980. The mall stores were sold to JCPenney; the downtown store had closed shortly before, and its building was later converted to office and mixed-use space.
