Jamesway Mouse Pad
Add a note of regional retail history to your workspace with this Jamesway Mouse Pad. The chain began in Jamestown, New York, in 1961 and grew into a recognizable department store name across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic. Jamesway reached 138 stores at its 1991 peak, then faced bankruptcy and closed its remaining locations after liquidation sales in 1995. This design celebrates a company remembered by shoppers and collectors of American retail history.
Jamesway Corporation, commonly known as Jamesway, was a discount department store chain headquartered in Secaucus, New Jersey. Herbert Fisher founded it in 1961, opening the first store in Jamestown, New York; the company took its name from that city. The chain expanded during the 1960s and continued growing into the 1980s, acquiring properties from defunct discount retailers including Two Guys, Woolco, King's, and one Mays location. It also acquired the Westons discount store chain in the late 1970s. The original Jamestown store moved to Chautauqua Mall in the late 1980s. Jamesway reached a peak of 138 stores in 1991, operating across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic, with nearly 6,000 employees. After store closures and a refinancing effort, it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July 1993. It emerged in January 1995 with 90 stores, but filed for bankruptcy again in October and decided to close its remaining locations. Liquidation sales ran from October to December 1995. Ames acquired 11 former Jamesway locations and reopened them under its own name; Ames later filed for bankruptcy and closed its stores.
