Keep a little New England retail history in view with this Jordan Marsh square porcelain fridge magnet. Founded in Boston in 1841, Jordan Marsh grew into a department store closely associated with the city's downtown and with suburban shopping. Its domed Shopper's World location opened in Framingham in 1951, becoming a recognizable regional landmark. For former customers and collectors, the name recalls seasonal traditions, familiar store visits, and a departed part of Boston's commercial story.
Founded in Boston in 1841 by Eben Dyer Jordan, Jordan Marsh began as a dry-goods business serving wholesale customers. Benjamin L. Marsh joined Jordan in 1851, and in 1861 the partners began selling directly to the public from 450 Washington Street. The business grew into a department store, expanding into nearby buildings and offering goods from around the world. Its Boston flagship later occupied a large downtown complex, while the company also opened suburban branches. The domed Jordan Marsh store at Shopper's World in Framingham opened in 1951. Hahn Department Stores acquired Jordan Marsh in 1928; Hahn became a predecessor to Allied Stores, and Jordan Marsh became part of Allied in 1935. Campeau acquired Allied in 1986 and Federated in 1988. After bankruptcy proceedings and corporate consolidation, Allied merged into Federated in 1992. The historic Washington Street flagship was demolished in 1975, and Federated converted the New England Jordan Marsh stores to Macy's in 1996. A separate Florida division, operated by Allied from 1956, became part of Burdines in 1991.
