Product Details & Size Guide

GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

Carry a piece of Great Plains railroad history into your daily travels. The Kansas Pacific Railway began with a railroad plan organized in 1855, then pushed west from Kansas City after construction started in 1863. Its route reached Lawrence and Junction City before extending across Kansas toward Colorado. This backpack celebrates the line’s role in connecting Kansas City and Denver in 1870, and the history-minded travelers who still follow the story of the railway that became part of Union Pacific.

The Kansas Pacific Railway began as the Leavenworth, Pawnee and Western Railroad, organized in 1855. No construction took place before the Civil War. In 1863, John C. Frémont and Samuel Hallett reorganized it as the Union Pacific, Eastern Division, a federally authorized railroad independent of the Union Pacific Railroad. Construction began west from Kansas City in September 1863, and service reached Lawrence in 1864 and Junction City in 1866. In March 1869, Congress renamed the company the Kansas Pacific Railway. Its route crossed Kansas through Salina and Fort Hays, then continued into Colorado. The line reached Kit Carson in March 1870; its branches met at Comanche Crossing on August 15, and trains reached Denver that month. The Kansas City-to-Denver connection completed a coast-to-coast railway network, though river crossings still interrupted some journeys. The company received government land grants along its route, and its main line helped open transportation and settlement across the central Great Plains. In 1874, Union Pacific investor Jay Gould gained effective control. In 1880, the Kansas Pacific and Denver Pacific were consolidated into the Union Pacific. The former Kansas Pacific main line remains an integral part of the Union Pacific network.
