GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Carry a Great Plains railway story with you using this Kansas Pacific Railway passport cover. The company’s route began its westward progress from Kansas City in 1863, reached communities across Kansas, and continued into Colorado. In 1870, its connection to Denver joined the cities by rail and contributed to a coast-to-coast network. The Kansas Pacific name lasted until consolidation into the Union Pacific in 1880. A fitting travel companion for railway collectors and explorers interested in the history of Kansas and Colorado.
The Kansas Pacific Railway began as the Leavenworth, Pawnee and Western Railroad, organized in 1855. No construction took place before the Civil War. In 1863, John C. Frémont and Samuel Hallett reorganized it as the Union Pacific, Eastern Division, a federally authorized railroad independent of the Union Pacific Railroad. Construction began west from Kansas City in September 1863, and service reached Lawrence in 1864 and Junction City in 1866. In March 1869, Congress renamed the company the Kansas Pacific Railway. Its route crossed Kansas through Salina and Fort Hays, then continued into Colorado. The line reached Kit Carson in March 1870; its branches met at Comanche Crossing on August 15, and trains reached Denver that month. The Kansas City-to-Denver connection completed a coast-to-coast railway network, though river crossings still interrupted some journeys. The company received government land grants along its route, and its main line helped open transportation and settlement across the central Great Plains. In 1874, Union Pacific investor Jay Gould gained effective control. In 1880, the Kansas Pacific and Denver Pacific were consolidated into the Union Pacific. The former Kansas Pacific main line remains an integral part of the Union Pacific network.
