Kerr Drug was a North Carolina drugstore chain founded by Banks Kerr in 1951. Kerr, valedictorian of the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy, opened the first store at University Mall in Chapel Hill. The business grew into a regional chain with headquarters in Raleigh and developed a reputation for clinical pharmacy services, community focus, and partnerships with local physicians and universities. In January 1995, Thrift Drug, then owned by JCPenney, acquired Kerr's 97 stores. Following required store divestments connected with JCPenney's proposed Eckerd Drug purchase, a new Kerr Drug entity acquired 161 stores in North and South Carolina. In 2002, UNC-Chapel Hill's School of Pharmacy dedicated Banks D. Kerr Hall to its founder. Kerr later refocused on North Carolina, selling 11 Charleston stores in 2009 and introducing the Naturally Kerr format. In 2013, Walgreens bought Kerr's remaining 76 stores and distribution center; most locations were converted to the Walgreens name.
