GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Enjoy a daily cup with a nod to the history of Klopfenstein's, the upscale men's clothing retailer founded in Tacoma. Its story reaches back to 1909 and continued through downtown Seattle stores, shopping center expansion, and a flagship at Two Union Square. Family leadership, a merger with Leslie-Hughes, and Hartmarx ownership shaped the company's later years before all stores closed by summer 1993. A thoughtful choice for former shoppers and Pacific Northwest retail history fans.
Klopfenstein's was an upscale men's clothing retailer founded in Tacoma, Washington. Its roots reach back to 1909, when Clarence F. Klopfenstein and Samuel Conrad purchased a downtown Tacoma building for a menswear store. In 1918, Klopfenstein and Edward Mason opened a new men's store at 936 Pacific; after Klopfenstein bought out Mason in 1925, it became known as Klopfenstein's. The business opened in downtown Seattle in 1924 and later moved to Fourth Avenue. In 1939, a new Fourth Avenue store opened, and ownership passed from Clarence to his son Hugh. The retailer expanded into shopping centers, with locations including Northgate Mall in 1950, Lloyd Center in Oregon in 1960, Aurora Village in 1962, and Tacoma Mall in 1965. After merging with Seattle retailer Leslie-Hughes in 1966, it moved in 1967 to a large store at Sixth Avenue and Pine Street. Hartmarx acquired the company in 1968 and expanded its stores in the region and Alaska. The Seattle flagship moved to Two Union Square in 1989. Hartmarx sold the division in 1992; all Klopfenstein's stores had closed by summer 1993.
