Kuhn's-Big K began in 1913 as Kuhn Brothers, a chain of variety stores founded in Columbia, Tennessee. The first Big K discount store opened in 1962. By 1969, the company operated 35 variety stores and 18 Big K discount department stores, and that year it officially adopted the name Kuhn's - Big K Stores Corporation. It announced plans to go public in 1970 and completed a stock offering in April 1971. During the early 1970s, the company expanded and developed larger stores, including a planned 76,000-square-foot location in Nashville. In January 1972, it took over the lease of a Sky City store in Greeneville, Tennessee. In September 1977, Kuhn's-Big K acquired the competing Edward's discount chain in South Carolina; its 33 stores operated as the subsidiary Big K-Edwards. After an attempted merger with Walmart in 1980 fell through over store lease complications, Kuhn's-Big K agreed to merge with Walmart in June 1981. The deal was valued at $13 million, and the merger brought the regional chain to a close.
