Unterberg and Towbin left in 1986 to join Shearson Lehman. The firm's stock trading exposure contributed to its collapse after the 1987 market crash. Franklin Savings Association acquired it in February 1988, but its holding company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July 1989. By the end of that year, staffing had fallen from a peak of 2,200 to 45.
