GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Start the day with a reminder of Lake Central Airlines and the people who shaped its history. Founded as Turner Airlines, it began service in 1950 and grew into a regional carrier linking communities from Chicago to Pittsburgh. In 1955, employees acquired 97.5 percent of its outstanding stock, making the airline a remarkable chapter in employee ownership. This coffee mug is a fitting choice for aviation enthusiasts, airline-history collectors, and fans of Indianapolis heritage.
Lake Central Airlines was a scheduled local service carrier serving locations across the Midwestern and eastern United States from 1950 until its merger into Allegheny Airlines in 1968. Its predecessor, Turner Airlines, was founded in 1948 and based at Weir Cook Airport in Indianapolis, Indiana, now Indianapolis International Airport. In the 1950s, Lake Central's network extended from Chicago to Pittsburgh. It served 21 airports in August 1953 and 39 by May 1968. In February 1955, it became the first employee-owned scheduled airline in the history of the air transport industry: 162 employees, 65 percent of the workforce, purchased 97.5 percent of the outstanding stock. Its aircraft included Douglas DC-3s, Convair 340s and 580s, Beechcraft Bonanzas, and Nord 262s. DC-3 service ended in 1967, and by spring 1968 its fleet consisted of Convair 580 and Nord 262 turboprops. On March 5, 1967, Flight 527 crashed near Marseilles, Ohio, killing all 38 passengers and crew. Effective July 1, 1968, Lake Central was acquired by and merged into Allegheny Airlines. Allegheny became USAir in 1979, then US Airways in 1997; American Airlines acquired US Airways through a merger in 2015.
