Bring a distinctive piece of airline history to your everyday desk with this Laker Airways metal business card holder. Founded in 1966, the British airline became known for charter flying and its ambitious Skytrain service from Gatwick to New York. Sir Freddie Laker's challenge to established transatlantic travel practices made the company an enduring subject for aviation enthusiasts and collectors. This business accessory offers a practical way to keep that story close at work, at meetings, or while traveling.
Laker Airways Ltd. was a private British airline founded by Sir Freddie Laker in 1966. Registered on 8 February, it began operating from Gatwick Airport on 29 July with two Bristol Britannia aircraft, initially flying on behalf of Air France. The airline grew from charter services carrying passengers and cargo to holiday destinations into a long-haul low-fare pioneer. It introduced the widebody DC-10 in 1972 and launched Skytrain, its scheduled Gatwick–New York service, on 26 September 1977. Later routes included Los Angeles and Miami; the airline also operated from Berlin Tegel and briefly flew scheduled service between Manchester and Zürich. Laker pursued other international routes and a wider European low-fare network, but several proposals did not proceed. During the early 1980s recession, financial pressures and competition weakened the business. Laker Airways operated its last flight on 5 February 1982 and went bankrupt. Its history is associated with low-fare transatlantic travel, charter flying, Gatwick, and Sir Freddie Laker’s efforts to challenge established airline practices.
