GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Mark your journeys with a reminder of a hometown retailer whose story reached far beyond Columbus. Lazarus began in 1851 as a small family clothing shop and grew into a regional department-store chain, later becoming a founding partner of Federated Department Stores. Expansion brought the Lazarus name to new communities, while mergers and rebranding eventually led to Macy's. This passport cover is a fitting travel keepsake for department-store collectors, Ohio heritage enthusiasts, and fans of changing regional brands.
Lazarus began in 1851, when Simon Lazarus opened a one-room men's clothing store in downtown Columbus, Ohio. The family business expanded from men's clothing to a broader range of merchandise, with sons Fred Lazarus Sr. and Ralph joining and introducing marketing practices. In 1928, Lazarus acquired Cincinnati's John Shillito Company, founded in 1830. The next year, Lazarus became one of the four founding partners of Federated Department Stores. The chain grew beyond central Ohio, reaching Indianapolis in 1973 and Huntington, West Virginia, in 1981. In 1986, it merged with Federated division Shillito–Rike's and adopted the Lazarus name while taking on the division's Cincinnati headquarters. Federated added other acquired store groups to Lazarus in 1987. In 1995, Lazarus joined an Atlanta-based Federated division with Rich's and Goldsmith's while keeping its local name. Federated rebranded the stores Lazarus-Macy's in 2003 and completed their conversion to Macy's in 2005. Former Lazarus stores later moved among Macy's regional divisions as systems integrations were completed.
