Bring a touch of Caribbean airline history to relaxed gatherings with this Leeward Islands Air Transport can cooler. LIAT connected island communities for generations, beginning in 1956 with flights between Antigua and Montserrat and later expanding across the region. Its name recalls everyday journeys, changing aircraft, and a shared chapter in Caribbean travel. A spirited pick for airline enthusiasts, former passengers, and collectors, this can cooler celebrates a regional identity that remains meaningful long after the original airline ceased operations.
Leeward Islands Air Transport Services, known as LIAT, was founded by Frank Delisle in Montserrat on 20 October 1956. It began with a single Piper Apache flying between Antigua and Montserrat. In 1957, a 75 percent acquisition by BWIA helped the airline expand across the Caribbean. Court Line acquired a 75 percent share in 1971, bringing jet service with BAC One-Eleven aircraft; after Court Line went bankrupt in August 1974, 11 Caribbean governments stepped in and smaller aircraft returned to the fleet. LIAT grew during the 1980s and was partially privatized in November 1995. In 2007 it purchased Caribbean Star Airlines, incorporating five of its DHC-8 aircraft and briefly adopting the slogan “LIAT, Star of the Caribbean.” The airline transitioned from Dash 8 aircraft to an all-ATR fleet by 2016. After a 2020 announcement of liquidation and subsequent administration, LIAT ceased operations on 24 January 2024. A reformed entity, LIAT (2020), began limited service in August 2024 and later rebranded as Liat Air.
