Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Keep Lehigh and New England Railroad history close with this double-sided keychain charm. Organized in 1895, the L&NE grew through a succession of regional rail lines and pursued a New England connection that remained unfinished between Slatington and Pine Island. The railroad served Pennsylvania communities and moved coal and cement before ending operations in 1961. A small everyday keepsake for railfans, collectors, and anyone drawn to the changing story of northeastern railroading.
The Lehigh and New England Railroad (L&NE) was organized on April 2, 1895, as successor to the Pennsylvania, Poughkeepsie and Boston Railroad. Its long-planned route linked Pennsylvania with New England, although the line from Slatington to Pine Island was never completed; the railroad used trackage rights to reach parts of its intended route. Earlier predecessor companies had pursued a Poughkeepsie Bridge connection, and the Philadelphia and Reading Railway briefly controlled related lines in the early 1890s. The Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company gained control of the L&NE in 1904. Subsequent additions included the Lehigh and Lackawanna, Wind Gap and Delaware, Northampton, and Panther Creek railroads, along with lines serving Bethlehem, Martins Creek, Tamaqua, and Summit Hill. A Reading lease was rejected in 1926. Although the railroad remained profitable, declining prospects for anthracite coal led its directors to end operations on October 31, 1961. Some Pennsylvania lines passed to the Lehigh and New England Railway, formed by the Central Railroad of New Jersey; other surviving trackage later went to Conrail in 1976. The L&NE is also remembered for diesel locomotives, mostly built by Alco.
