Keep a small reminder of Allentown's retail past close at hand with this Leh's Double-Sided Keychain Charm. Henry Leh opened his Hamilton Street store in 1850, beginning with clothing sales and footwear made in the building. The business expanded into a department store, later serving shoppers in Quakertown, Whitehall Township, and Bethlehem. Its downtown flagship closed in 1994, and all remaining stores followed in 1996. This keepsake recognizes a family-founded company woven into generations of regional shopping memories.
Henry Leh founded his store on April 25, 1850, at 626 Hamilton Street in Allentown, Pennsylvania, initially selling ready-to-wear clothing and making boots and shoes. The early business, first called Neleigh & Leh, also manufactured footwear on the upper floors of its four-story building. During the Civil War, a Union Army boot contract helped strengthen the company, which employed about 175 people in manufacturing. The store expanded into a department store, and Horatio Koch became a partner after marrying Leh's daughter Sallie. In 1911, following Henry Leh's death in 1910, the remodeled H. Leh & Co. reopened with an expanded building; its shoe factory closed that year. The downtown store grew through further expansions, while satellite locations later opened in Quakertown in 1972, Whitehall Township in 1978, and Bethlehem in 1988. In 1992, co-owners John Leh II and William Leh bought out the Koch family's interest. The flagship closed in 1994, and the remaining department stores closed on June 29, 1996. The former five-story flagship was renovated for use by Lehigh County.
