Bring a piece of American furniture retail history to your everyday wardrobe with this Levitz Furniture cotton polo shirt. Founded in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, in 1910, the family business grew into a nationwide retailer and helped popularize warehouse-style furniture stores in the 1960s. Its story spans changing ways of shopping for home furnishings, major restructurings, and eventual liquidation. A thoughtful pick for former shoppers, retail-history enthusiasts, and collectors drawn to the familiar Levitz name and its place in the evolution of furniture sales.
Founded by Richard Levitz in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, in 1910, Levitz Furniture grew into a nationwide American furniture retailer. In the 1960s, Richard’s sons Leon and Ralph expanded the business and helped pioneer warehouse-style stores selling moderately priced, brand-name furniture. This format helped establish the furniture warehouse as a distinct retail concept. The company later faced changing consumer preferences as shoppers increasingly favored showroom displays arranged to resemble rooms in homes. Levitz declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1997 and again in 2005, emerging from both proceedings after restructuring and receiving support from new outside backers. In 2005, it also acquired Seaman’s Furniture and Huffman Koos stores after their bankruptcy. After announcing store closures and workforce reductions in 1998, Levitz reduced its warehouse network from 65 sites to 17. By October 2007, when it filed for bankruptcy again, it operated nearly 80 stores, mostly in the Northeastern United States and on the West Coast, under PLVTZ LLC. In October 2008, the case converted to Chapter 7 and liquidation sales began. Hilco Merchant Resources led the group that acquired the company in bankruptcy and liquidated its inventory as stores closed. Oak Point Partners acquired remaining assets of the PLVTZ, Inc., also known as the Levitz Furniture Bankruptcy Estate, on March 19, 2013.
