Product Details & Size Guide

GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

Carry a piece of Northeast Philadelphia sports history into your daily routine with this Liberty Bell Park Horse Racetrack backpack. The track opened on June 7, 1963, after a ten-month build, welcoming harness racing fans to a grandstand with room for 30,000. Thoroughbred racing followed in 1969, adding another chapter before that era ended in 1974. Liberty Bell Park announced its closure in 1985, and the property later became a shopping mall. This design honors a distinctive local landmark and the generations who remember its racing days.

Liberty Bell Park was a race track in Northeast Philadelphia, built after the Pennsylvania harness racing commission granted its first parimutuel track license to Liberty Bell Racing Association in 1961. The association was led by Philadelphia political figure and Eagles owner James P. Clark, who died in 1962 before the track opened. His niece’s husband, Michael J. O’Neill, oversaw construction and became the first president. Built over ten months at a cost of $12.5 million, the facility opened on June 7, 1963, with a 30,000-seat grandstand and separate ovals for harness and Thoroughbred racing. Its first meet drew 510,646 patrons over 50 days. Pennsylvania legalized parimutuel Thoroughbred wagering in 1968, and Liberty Bell began that racing on May 31, 1969, after an $800,000 conversion. Thoroughbred racing ended in 1974 when Keystone Park opened, while harness racing continued through 1985. Competition from Atlantic City casinos and the rebuilt Garden State Park Racetrack was cited in the track’s decline. Liberty Bell announced in October 1985 that it would not race in 1986. The 288-acre property was sold in May 1986 to Western Development Corp.; Franklin Mills shopping mall, later called Philadelphia Mills and now Franklin Mall, was built on the site.
