Lion Store began downtown in 1857, and the cast-iron lions placed outside its doors helped give the business the name generations of shoppers remembered. As Toledo grew, the store followed customers to suburban shopping centers, becoming part of the city’s changing landscape. This backpack celebrates that local story, from Frederick Eaton’s original dry goods business to the familiar Lion Store name retired in 1999.
Lion Store began in Toledo, Ohio, in 1857, when New Englander Frederick Eaton opened a dry goods business that soon moved to a larger downtown location. Between 1859 and 1865, Eaton placed two life-size cast-iron lion statues outside the store; customers began calling it “The Lion Store.” The business moved to its final downtown site in 1866, with the lions going along. In 1890, following Eaton’s death, the store became part of H.B. Claflin & Company and was incorporated as The Lion Dry Goods Co. Mercantile Stores later acquired the business and operated the chain from 1914 until Dillard’s acquired it in 1998. The nameplate was retired in 1999. After World War II, Lion expanded with Toledo’s suburban growth, opening at Westgate Village Shopping Center in 1957 and Southwyck Shopping Center in 1972. Its downtown store closed in 1980, and later locations included North Towne Square and Franklin Park Mall. By 1998, the chain had three fashion apparel stores and two home furnishing stores in local malls. The Franklin Park location continues under the Dillard’s name, where the lion statues remain in the main atrium.
