Lipman's was an American department store chain based in Portland, Oregon, founded in Sacramento, California, in 1850 as Lipman–Wolfe & Company. The business began as a partnership between Soloman Lipman and his nephew Adolphe Wolfe during the California Gold Rush, and later expanded into Nevada during silver rushes. After the decline of the Comstock Lode, Wolfe moved to Portland in 1880 and re-established the business there. Following several moves caused by floods and limited space, the flagship store opened in 1912 at Fifth and Washington Streets, across from Meier & Frank. By the end of its original identity, the chain had grown to six Oregon stores. The Wolfe family sold the company to Dayton Hudson in the 1950s, which retained Lipman's as a division. In 1979, Marshall Field's bought the six stores, which became Frederick & Nelson in early April. A planned off-price revival in 1987 did not last: the Oregon locations went to The Crescent, and the remaining stores became clearance centers before closing in 1990. The former flagship building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 and reopened as a hotel in 1996.
