Product Details & Size Guide
Celebrate a familiar name in American off-price retail with this Loehmann's Men's Sport Polo Shirt. Frieda Loehmann and her son Charles opened their first store in Brooklyn in 1921, building a business around seasonal designer overstocks and bargain prices. From its family beginnings, the company expanded to about 100 stores at its 1999 peak. The Back Room became a memorable part of the shopping experience, giving this piece a connection to the people, places, and retail history behind the name.
Loehmann's began in 1921, when former department store buyer Frieda Loehmann and her son Charles opened a store in a former automobile showroom at Bedford Avenue and Sterling Place in Brooklyn, New York City. They bought seasonal overstocks from New York designers and sold them at bargain prices. Charles opened a second store on Fordham Road in the Bronx in 1930. After Frieda's death in 1962, the original store closed, and the Charles C. Loehmann company went public and expanded. Associated Dry Goods acquired the chain in 1983; after its 1986 merger with The May Department Stores Company, May sold Loehmann's in 1988 to an investor group led by Sefinco Ltd. and the Sprout Group. The company went public again in 1996 and had about 100 stores in 17 states at its 1999 peak. After several ownership changes and Chapter 11 filings, Loehmann's began closing its stores in January 2014 and shut its last location on February 26, moving to online-only retailing. It ceased operations in 2018. Century 21 purchased the brand in 2020; a 2025 report said it planned pop-up locations, with a return expected in 2026.
