George Washington Taylor joined in 1834, giving the business its lasting name. The store moved to Grand and Chrystie Streets in 1853, then opened a Broadway location in 1859. After expanding uptown, the company opened its Fifth Avenue flagship in 1914. In 1916, it became a founding unit of Associated Dry Goods. President Dorothy Shaver helped establish a suburban branch-store model, beginning with Manhasset, New York. May Company acquired Associated Dry Goods in 1986; Federated Department Stores acquired May in 2005, then sold Lord & Taylor to NRDC Equity Partners in 2006. Hudson’s Bay Company purchased NRDC in 2008, and Lord & Taylor became its subsidiary in 2012. Le Tote took operational control in 2019. After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2020, the retailer closed its stores in 2021. Saadia Group acquired its intellectual property and relaunched it online that year. Regal Brands Global acquired the intellectual property in 2024 and relaunched the e-commerce business in 2025.
