GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

Wear a chapter of Alabama retail history with this Loveman's of Alabama Heavy Knit Quarter-Zip Sweatshirt. Founded in Birmingham in 1887, the company grew into a multi-city retailer anchored by a landmark downtown store. The 1935 replacement building brought shoppers a celebrated corner clock and pioneering conveniences, while later branches reached Montgomery, Huntsville, and other Alabama communities. This heritage-inspired layer honors the store's lasting place in local memory and the people who made it a destination.

Founded in Birmingham in 1887 by Adolph Bernard Loveman as A.B. Loveman's Dry Goods Emporium, the business began at 1915 Second Avenue. Moses V. Joseph joined soon afterward, and the name became Loveman & Joseph; with Emil Loeb's addition in 1889, it became Loveman, Joseph & Loeb. The main store opened in 1890 at 200 19th Street, at 3rd Avenue North, and was expanded in 1899. An annex followed in 1917. In 1923, the firm joined the City Stores Company syndicate with a Memphis retailer and a New Orleans retailer. A major fire destroyed the department store on March 10, 1934, but the annex exterior survived. The company reopened temporarily, then completed a replacement building on the site in 1935. Its corner clock became a local landmark; the store was among the nation's early air-conditioned department stores and the first in Alabama with an escalator. Suburban growth included Montgomery in 1954, Huntsville in 1966, Bessemer in 1969, Fairfield in 1970, and Birmingham's Century Plaza in 1976. City Stores filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July 1979; liquidation followed, and the downtown flagship closed in April 1980. The building entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and later became home to the McWane Science Center.
