Lynx Aviation, Inc. was a Denver, Colorado-based regional airline formed by Frontier Airlines Holdings on September 6, 2006, to lower costs on shorter routes and connect smaller airports with Frontier’s Denver hub. The carrier received its FAA operating certificate on December 5, 2007, and began passenger service two days later. Its flights were marketed as Frontier Airlines operated by Lynx Aviation, and its name reflected both the lynx images on its aircraft and its connecting role. Frontier and Lynx entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in April 2008. On August 13, 2009, Republic Airways Holdings acquired both through a bankruptcy-court auction. Republic announced plans in February 2010 to close Lynx, but service continued to Aspen, Durango, and Colorado Springs, with four Q400 aircraft remaining into 2011. The final aircraft left Frontier service and were transferred to United Express operations by Republic; the Q400s were later sold to Air Canada for Air Canada Express service operated by Jazz Air. In 2012, Lynx’s operation was folded into Republic Airways.
