Product Details & Size Guide

GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

Mark the season with a tribute to Lytton's and its place in Chicago history. The store opened as The Hub in 1887, moved into the Lytton Store Building in 1913, and grew into a regional chain with branches beyond downtown. Its story included new leadership, a name change in 1946, and a final chapter that ended with the chain's closure in 1986. This ornament offers collectors a thoughtful way to remember the State Street flagship and the department store that helped shape the Loop's commercial past.

Henry Charles Lytton began in retail with a store in Ionia, Michigan, followed by ventures in Grand Rapids and Indianapolis that provided capital for a Chicago store. Nicknamed The Hub, it opened in 1887 at Jackson and State Streets in the Otis Building, specializing in mass-produced menswear. In 1913, the store moved across the street into the Lytton Store Building, an eighteen-story structure designed by Marshall & Fox. The Hub occupied its lower eight floors and both basements, and added sporting goods. Lytton retired in 1917; his son George took over. Henry returned to lead the company in 1933 after George's death. A store opened at the Century of Progress world's fair in 1934, and by the late 1930s branches operated in Evanston, Oak Park, and Gary. In 1946, the company adopted the name Henry C. Lytton & Co. to mark Lytton's 100th birthday. He remained president until his death in 1949, aged 102. Buyers Thomas Raffery and Matthew Kallman acquired the chain in 1983. It filed for bankruptcy the following March; nine branches were dissolved to support the State Street flagship. The chain closed in 1986. Wieboldt's acquired the name and remaining inventory, but its planned relaunch did not occur before it ceased operating in 1987. The former store building is now used by DePaul University and belongs to the Loop Retail Historic District.
