Mabley & Carew was a Cincinnati, Ohio, department store whose roots dated to 1877. Detroit merchants C. R. Mabley and Joseph T. Carew were stranded in Cincinnati by a late train while traveling to Memphis. After reaching Fountain Square, they saw a rental sign and opened a store in the heart of the river city. The business introduced full-page newspaper advertising, elaborate Christmas performances and an Arbor Day custom in Cincinnati. Mabley died in 1885, and Carew became sole owner; after Carew's death in 1914, his cousin Bolton Stretch Armstrong led the company for 37 years. The flagship operated in Carew Tower from 1930 to 1960. Allied Stores then purchased the business and combined it with its Rollman division. Mabley & Carew stores expanded into former Rollman and E. C. Denton locations, including branches in Western Hills Plaza, Hamilton and Middletown. In 1978, Elder-Beerman bought six stores and eventually changed their nameplates to its own. The former Rollman's building closed and was demolished in 1991.
