GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Mark a suitcase with a tribute to Maddux Air Lines, the Southern California carrier that began scheduled flying on September 22, 1927. Its first flight carried 12 passengers from San Diego to Los Angeles aboard a Ford Tri-motor, linking two cities that became its hubs. The airline later added routes to San Francisco, Tijuana, and Phoenix before joining a chain of mergers that reshaped American air travel. This luggage tag brings that early passenger-flight story along on every journey.
Founded in 1927 by Jack L. Maddux, a Los Angeles Ford and Lincoln dealership owner, Maddux Air Lines began scheduled flying on September 22. Its inaugural flight carried 12 passengers from San Diego to Los Angeles aboard a Ford 4-AT Tri-motor. The airline first used the Inglewood Site landing strip, later associated with Los Angeles International Airport, before choosing Rogers Airport and subsequently Grand Central Air Terminal in Glendale. Los Angeles and San Diego became its hubs. Routes expanded to San Francisco in April 1928, with scheduled stops in Fresno and Oakland, and to Agua Caliente in Tijuana that November. Service to Phoenix began in February 1929. Maddux also served as the California connection for Transcontinental Air Transport, whose New York-to-California operations began in July 1929. On November 16, the companies combined as TAT-Maddux Air Lines, with Jack Maddux leading its western operations. In 1930, TAT-Maddux merged with Western Air Express to form Transcontinental & Western Air, later known as TWA. Maddux’s brief history reflects the rapid growth and consolidation of early American passenger aviation.
