Kohl's acquired the chain in 1988 for $90 million and converted most MainStreet locations to the Kohl's name in March 1989. The MainStreet identity also endured in the name of MainStreet Square, a Downers Grove plaza whose sign retained the name into the 2000s. The former MainStreet-anchored site is now occupied by a Kohl's store.
