$24.99
Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Keep business cards together with a small tribute to MainStreet’s place in regional retail history. Federated Department Stores launched the Chicago-based chain in November 1983, and it expanded to 29 locations across four states during the decade. MainStreet reached Metro Detroit in 1986 before Kohl’s bought the chain in 1988 and converted most stores in March 1989. This card holder suits retail-history collectors and former shoppers who remember the name and its brief but notable run.
MainStreet was a Chicago-based department store chain launched in November 1983 by Federated Department Stores, now known as Macy's, Inc. It began with seven stores in the Chicago area and grew during the 1980s to 29 locations across Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, and Minnesota. The chain targeted middle-market shoppers, focusing primarily on softlines. Its stores paired a racetrack-style layout with checkouts distributed around the store, combining features associated with discount retail and traditional department stores. The first locations beyond the Chicago area opened around Metro Detroit in 1986. After Campeau Corporation acquired Federated, it sold MainStreet to reduce debt connected with the buyout. Kohl's acquired the chain in 1988 for $90 million and converted most MainStreet locations to the Kohl's name in March 1989. The MainStreet identity also endured in the name of MainStreet Square, a Downers Grove plaza whose sign retained the name into the 2000s. The former MainStreet-anchored site is now occupied by a Kohl's store.
