Its stores paired a racetrack-style layout with checkouts distributed around the store, combining features associated with discount retail and traditional department stores. The first locations beyond the Chicago area opened around Metro Detroit in 1986. After Campeau Corporation acquired Federated, it sold MainStreet to reduce debt connected with the buyout. Kohl's acquired the chain in 1988 for $90 million and converted most MainStreet locations to the Kohl's name in March 1989. The MainStreet identity also endured in the name of MainStreet Square, a Downers Grove plaza whose sign retained the name into the 2000s. The former MainStreet-anchored site is now occupied by a Kohl's store.
