GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Bring the Maison Blanche story along on your travels. Founded in New Orleans in 1897, the department store grew from a local institution into a regional name, with a landmark Canal Street flagship and stores in Louisiana and Florida. Its history of new owners, changing markets, and the familiar Mr. Bingle Christmas mascot connects retail history with New Orleans traditions. This travel mug makes a fitting keepsake for former shoppers, hometown enthusiasts, and collectors of memorable department store names.
Founded in New Orleans in 1897 by German immigrant Isidore Newman, Maison Blanche grew from a local department store into a regional chain. Its landmark Canal Street building was replaced around 1908–1909 by a distinctive structure that still stands. City Stores Company acquired the business in 1923 and merged it with Loveman's in 1950. After City Stores filed for bankruptcy in 1979, Goudchaux's of Baton Rouge bought three Maison Blanche stores and the name in 1982. The business operated as Goudchaux/Maison Blanche and reopened the Canal Street flagship in 1984. Following purchases of Florida chains in 1987 and 1988, the Goudchaux name was dropped and the stores became Maison Blanche. Expansion brought the chain to 16 Florida stores, but the company sold eight Gulf Coast stores to Dillard's in 1991. Mercantile Stores bought the remaining 16-store operation in 1992; its Louisiana stores retained the Maison Blanche name. Dillard's acquired Mercantile in 1998 and closed the Canal Street store after briefly operating it. The building later became part of the New Orleans Ritz-Carlton, which opened in 2000.
