Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Bring a New Haven retail landmark into your everyday space with this Malley's Department Store foldable mobile phone display stand. The story reaches back to Edward Malley's merchandise display in Fair Haven in 1848 and the 1852 dry-goods shop at 65 Chapel Street. Over the decades, the business rebuilt after fires, expanded its downtown presence, and moved to 2 Church Street in 1962. A practical keepsake for local-history fans and collectors of the city’s changing shopping life.
Edward Malley began displaying merchandise in Fair Haven in 1848. In 1852, he established Malley & Co., a dry-goods store at 65 Chapel Street, across from the New Haven Green. The business expanded, partnered with William Neeley, and became William Neeley Co. in 1868. Fires destroyed the original store in 1875 and 1882; after rebuilding, the firm became Malley-Neeley Co. in 1893 and The Edw. Malley Co. in 1898. Its nine-story Beaux-Arts store opened at the original site in 1899 and later added a self-leveling elevator in 1923 and escalators in 1958. In October 1962, the store moved two blocks south to 2 Church Street, beside Chapel Square Mall. The family business was sold after Edward Malley died in 1971. Ownership passed to The Outlet Company in 1978 and United Department Stores in 1980. The store closed in February 1982 after UDS went bankrupt. A successor venture, Ceasar's Department Store, occupied the building briefly in 1988–89. The vacant building was given to New Haven in 1997 and demolished that October. Gateway Community College opened a campus on the site in 2012.
