GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Bring a little New England store history to a casual gathering with this Mammoth Mart can cooler. The company began in 1956 in a Framingham mill building known as Mammoth Mills, took the Mammoth Mart name in 1962, and grew into a familiar regional discount chain. Marty, its smiling mammoth mascot, remains a memorable part of the story. This piece is for collectors who enjoy distinctive local brands and anyone drawn to the changing names and places of American retail.
Mammoth Mart was a discount department store chain based in the northeastern United States, with a strong presence in New England. Max Coffman and Henry Gornstein opened its first store in Framingham, Massachusetts, in 1956. The store occupied a mill building called Mammoth Mills, which gave the original business its first name. The chain adopted the name Mammoth Mart in 1962. Its large, plain stores, often in suburban shopping centers, sold housewares, hardware, and clothing, and helped establish a format later pursued by other discount retailers. The advertising mascot was Marty, a smiling mammoth in a blazer. By 1969, the chain had grown to 35 stores. In 1970 it acquired Boston Baby, an eight-store juvenile merchandise chain, and later expanded that division to 15 locations; the venture was liquidated in 1973. That September, Mammoth Mart also acquired two locations from Key Stores. The costs of the Boston Baby liquidation, alongside economic pressures, preceded the company's June 17, 1974, filing for bankruptcy protection under Chapter XI. King's Department Stores acquired Mammoth Mart for $43 million on June 15, 1977. By spring 1979, the remaining locations had been rebranded as King's.
