GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Keep a favorite cold drink close while celebrating the story of MarkAir and Alaska aviation. The airline’s beginnings came through Interior Airways, established in Fairbanks in 1947, with bush-pilot service and freight flights to remote places. Its history continued through North Slope development, the Alaska International Air chapter, and the MarkAir passenger service that began in 1984. This can cooler makes a distinctive keepsake for airline memorabilia collectors, Alaska history fans, and anyone who recalls the state’s regional flying tradition.
MarkAir was an Alaska airline whose history began after World War II, when Jim Magoffin started Interior Airways in 1947, offering bush-pilot services from Fairbanks. The company grew into freight work on the North Slope, supporting military construction and, from the 1960s, oil exploration. It operated Lockheed L-100 Hercules aircraft to remote gravel strips and built a base at Sagwon. After financial difficulties and bankruptcy in 1970, Interior Airways emerged in 1971 under Neil Bergt’s leadership and changed its name to Alaska International Air in 1972. Its work supported construction of the Alaska pipeline, while its business also expanded beyond the state. In 1975, the company adopted the name Alaska International Industries as an umbrella for its airline and other businesses. It acquired Great Northern Airlines in 1980 and folded it into AIA that year. In 1984, AIA adopted the MarkAir name and began scheduled passenger service, later adding the commuter operation MarkAir Express. After shifting from cooperation with Alaska Airlines to direct competition in 1991, MarkAir filed for bankruptcy in 1992, emerged in 1994, and filed again in April 1995. It ceased flying on October 24, 1995. MarkAir Express also entered bankruptcy and stopped operating in 1996.
